Iron Maiden est un groupe de heavy metal traditionnel britannique formé en 1975 au Royaume-Uni par le bassiste Steve Harris et son ami d'enfance Dave Murray. Ils furent les pionniers de ce qui fut appelé la NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal) avec les groupes Saxon, Def Leppard, Tygers of Pantang, etc. L'« ancienne vague » était représentée par Black Sabbath, Judas Priest et Motörhead. Iron Maiden est l'un des groupes heavy metal qui a recueilli le plus grand succès commercial au cours de son histoire, vendant plus de 100 millions d'albums.

Leur longévité, leurs compositions puissantes et mélodiques, la diversité de leur discographie et surtout leur qualité de précurseurs du genre en ont fait l'un des groupes phare de la scène heavy metal.

Le nom du groupe, quelle que soit l'interprétation qu'on lui donne, fut sujet à controverse : il peut se référer en effet à l'instrument de torture médiéval (la vierge de fer), à Jeanne d'Arc, ennemie de l'Angleterre, ou au surnom de Margaret Thatcher qui dirigeait pendant les débuts du groupe le Parti conservateur britannique. Certaines pochettes du groupe montrent d'ailleurs la mascotte du groupe (Eddie), sortie de l'imagination du dessinateur Derek Riggs, commettant un attentat contre Thatcher, ou encore en train d'arracher une affiche la représentant. Bien que les membres du groupe se soient toujours défendus que les dessins représentaient le premier ministre britannique.

Contestataire, donc, à une époque où le punk avait déjà bien fait sa place, le groupe reprit la rage et l'énergie du punk, mais en faisant de la musique leur priorité, le message, contrairement à celui du mouvement punk, étant secondaire. Plus mélodique, et plus technique, Iron Maiden surprit le Royaume-Uni
